Get a Membership to a Real Gym

For the first time in a long time I have a membership to a real gym. By real I mean a gym with dumbbells that weigh more than 75 pounds, barbells, kettlebells and medicine balls. For a while I was going with convenience. The gym that was closer to my home or closer to the facility where I run my boot camp.

After nearly a year of either not going to any gym or having a membership to the wrong gym, I’m back at it. It’s amazing how inspired you can feel just by changing your surroundings. I’m sort of ashamed to say this, but I had a membership (and still do) to Planet Fitness. Don’t get me wrong, Planet Fitness’ are great for newbies, but being someone of my status as a fitness professional, after all the years I’ve spent in “real” gyms I can’t do Planet Fitness. I have nothing against Planet Fitness…it’s just not the place for me.

So what is a “real” gym?

So, where am I now? A bigger and better gym. More free weights and racks. They offer group classes and I think spinning as well. I’m not there for that though. There’s a whole section of the gym that allows for cross fit type training, and since a lot of people aren’t into cross fit I pretty much have that area to myself during the middle of the day. It’s AWESOME!

Being able to challenge myself with my workouts with the variety of equipment available to me has me motivated all over again. I think I’m going to set some new goals for myself. I think I’ll try to put on some weight…more muscle, and keep my body composition under 10% body fat.

While the workout options are plenty, there’s also a different crowd at this gym. These gym goers are little more serious and experienced. They keep me going as well. That’s not to say that the people at Planet Fitness aren’t serious, but they just aren’t on the level of the people at this new. We all had to start somewhere though.

I could go everyday and try new exercises and workouts, perfect them, and take them to my boot camp clients.

This makes we wonder. I wonder if my new clients come into my boot camp with the same feeling. Do they feel motivated by all of the other members? Does having variety in their workouts inspire them? Is it enough to keep them coming to our 5:30 am sessions? If you’re in Charlotte and don’t mind waking up a little early I’d like you to join us!
